Since the debut of the Dragon Ball anime series, Toei Animation has been producing feature films based on the franchise since 1986. Seventeen feature films were produced, including three films based on the original Dragon Ball anime, thirteen films based on the sequel series Dragon Ball Z, and seventeenth film commemorating the tenth anniversary of the series.

The films were self-contained stories that do not follow the same continuity as their television counterpart, though a few are relatively easy to place within the series' timeline compared to others.

In addition to the animated feature films, there was also a two-episode OVA based on the Family Computer video game Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Saiyajin Zetsumetsu Keikaku (ドラゴンボールZ外伝サイヤ人絶滅計画?) and a special short film shown at the Jump Festa titled Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!.
